Venetian Masks for a masquerade ball are both very elegant and popular. Airing on the smarter side of fancy dress nights out these nights are increasingly popular and have become famous by films such as "Eyes Wide Shut" starring Tom Cruise. Masquerade balls started life in the 15th century as far as we can tell and evolved into public costume parties in Italy in the late 16th century and more so across europe in the 17th & 18th centuries. A new resurgence of masquerade balls began in the late 1990s in North America and are still held today, though in modern times the party atmosphere is emphasized and the formal dancing usually less prominent. Less formal costume parties may be a descendant of this tradition.
